![]() Standard menu-based battles are also included. Suikoden fans will recognize some of the gameplay systems, including a paper-rock-scissors duel combat system where you determine your next move based on what your opponent says (see our new videos for a sample). ![]() In typical Suikoden fashion, the main character, the prince of Falena Kingdom, is unnamed, so you get to go about the game as Prince Enter-Your-Name-Here (Prince IGN, in our case). As for the storyline, we'll keep the spoilers to ourselves, but the plot seems to be (slowly) growing to the complexity worthy of the series. This has resulted in some fun sea-faring event scenes, although there doesn't seem to be any of the Suikoden IV like control over your boat. Falena has a lengthy river system, so even when traveling to interior locations, you do so by ship. The game world and storyline offer some interesting twists. Meanwhile, the right analog stick just sits there, needlessly replicating the functionality of other buttons.ĭespite the problems early on, Suikoden V looks like it will offer quite a bit to those who take the time to explore further. It's possible to get your party lost behind buildings. When moving around in town, buildings and dungeons, you have no camera control, with the game automatically adjusting the view in somewhat awkward and inconsistent ways. Load times await when entering and exiting some buildings and before and after battle the waits aren't too long, but they have no place in a game that's on its third iteration on the same system and they get particularly annoying with the high enemy encounter rates during dungeons. The slow start is made even worse by some of the game's technical and presentation shortfalls. ![]() While the occasional event keeps things interesting, thanks in part to the voice acting (fully English for the US version - see our video section for an English trailer) and colorful visuals, walking around town and reading dialogue gets old pretty quick. Aside from a quick introductory dungeon sequence early on, most of the early parts of the adventure consist of exploring towns while waiting for the next event to take place. In fact, after about five hours of play time, forget about high gear - the story isn't even pushing red in low.
